Operator's Itinerary

Day 1:

As soon as you arrive into Calafate catch a taxi to your hotel, 20 minutes from the airport. Depending on what time you arrive you might have time for visiting the centre, bird watching at Laguna Nimes or visiting Glaciarium, the ice museum - a great introduction to Patagonia.

Accommodation: Kapenke Hotel or similar

Day 2: Perito Moreno Day Trip

We pick you up from your hotel in the morning and take you to the Bajo de Las Sombras port, from where we continue our journey by boat for around 20 minutes. We cross the part of the lake known as Brazo Rico and, once on the other side, receive an introductory talk on the day's  activities. The trek starts with a walk towards the Perito Moreno Glacier along a picturesque beach.

Upon reaching the ice we are split up into small groups and fit crampons to our trekking boots, under the supervision of experienced mountain guides. Instructions are given on how to walk on a glacier and the group sets off on the ice-hiking part of the trek. We spend approximately one and a half hours on the glacier, which is plenty of time to take photographs and marvel at the fascinating and infinite shapes of the centuries-old  ice. The mountain guide gives us interesting  snippets of information about the glacier, the southern region of Patagonia and local flora and fauna, etc., and you will get the chance to ask as many questions as you like.

The colours, shapes and sounds are all part of this wonderful experience on one of the most emblematic glaciers in Argentine Patagonia.

At the end of the ice trek we visit a cosy refuge, which is an excellent place to enjoy your packed lunch.

This excursion also includes a one hour visit to the walkways in front of the glacier. This can either be before or after the glacier trek. At the end of the day we will drop you off at your hotel.

Accommodation: Kapenke Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Horse riding in El Chalten

Today you start with a short walk or taxi ride to the bus station to catch the 8am bus to El  Chalten. The journey takes 3 hours and we will pick  you up at the  bus station and transfer you to your hotel. We will also go through the next few days with you to answer any last minute questions.

After lunch, at about 2pm, we collect you from your hotel in El Chalten and drive out to Cordon del Bosque, 12km away, on the unpaved road heading for Lago del Desierto. There, we cross over the Rio de Las Vueltas on a hanging bridge to where we meet the gauchos who will help us with the horses. We take the reins and our adventure begins!  We go through native forests and are able to enjoy typical views of this mountain area and also fantastic views of Mt Fitz Roy. At the end of the ride we'll enjoy a couple of mates (typical Argentine hot drink) together.

Accommodation: Cumbres Nevadas Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 4: El Chalten Hiking

Walking: 7/8 hrs. Distance: 17km

This trek to Laguna de los Tres is one of the highlights in the area and starts from El Pilar. We will leave El Chalten in a transfer to the trailhead, half an hour away. We then start this lovely walk in a forest on a path that ascends gently and first arrives at Piedras Blancas Glacier viewpoint. We'll have a brief stop here to enjoy the view of the hanging glacier. After a bit more gentle climbing  the challenging section of one hour of steep uphill to get to Laguna de los Tres, starts. The effort is all made worthwhile by the breathtaking views we get at the top, of Mt Fitz Roy, its satellite mountains and the valley we have just been walking along. Weather permitting; we will have lunch at the lagoon. We will then start the descent and head towards Laguna Capri, our home for the night and another very photographic spot in the national park!

Accommodation: Camping at Poincenot Campsite (Full Board)

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5: El Chalten Hiking

Walking: 6 hrs  Distance:18km

You may want to get up early to take some sunrise shots of Fitz Roy in its beautiful hues of red (weather permitting!)  After breakfast we'll head off again. We trek along past some beautiful lagoons Madre and Hija before dropping down into Torre valley. This glacial valley is loved by geologists and photographers for its perfect shape. At the end of the valley, we will find Laguna Torre, its glacier and the famous Mt Torre, one of the most difficult mountains in the  world  to climb. Sometimes floating on the lagoon are some icebergs that have broken off the Torre glacier.

The Fitz Roy river starts from this lagoon too and here is where there is a Tyrolean rope that is used by climbers to access the mountains that they plan to climb. We will also have time to visit D'Agostini camp ground - where lots of famous climbers have spent a night or two! After lunch at the lagoon, we will head back towards Chalten, along the Fitz Roy river valley and crossing over a couple of old moraines. If we are lucky we may spot a Magellanic woodpecker, the nearly extinct deer - Huemul and lots of beautiful wild flowers. Back in town, we might want to celebrate with a homemade beer or a delicious hot chocolate?!

Accommodation: Cumbres Nevadas Hotel or similar (includes breakfast)

Meals: Breakfast

Day 6: El Chalten Kayaking

We start the day with a transfer 21km out of El Chalten to the edge of Condor Lagoon. On arrival, we enjoy a hot drink while the guide goes through the details of the activity. We check equipment, get changed into our wetsuits and put on our life jackets. The adventure then begins! We practise a bit of rowing on Condor Lagoon and then we start to descend the Rio de Las Vueltas River. While we enjoy a row down the river and admire the forest, mountains and waterfalls the guide will be looking for a good spot to stop for lunch. After a delicious lunch on the riverbank we continue down the river until we arrive back at El Chalten. A transfer will be waiting for us to take us back to our hotels after an adventure on one of Patagonia's many rivers!
