These are great ways to orientate yourself in the city, learn a bit of background history and culture and get some insider tips from a local \u201cPorte\u00f1o\u201d. You will visit locations such as the 80m Obelisc that stands proud in the middle of the enormous Avenida 9 de Julio, the Government Palace locally known as the \u201cPink Palace\u201d, the Recoleta Cemetery where Evita was finally laid to rest and the artistic, tango neighbourhood of La Boca.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Casa-Rosada.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-196250\" alt=\"Casa Rosada\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Casa-Rosada-1024x769.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve visited the must sees of this sensational city, here are some of my top recommendations of how to spend and free time you might have.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Avenida de Mayo \u2013 <\/b>Walk the Avenida de Mayo from the Casa Rosada until the Plaza de Congreso stopping on the way to poke your head into or stop for a coffee in the Caf\u00e9 Tortoni (825) a great way to get a feel for what Buenos Aires would have been like in the early 1900\u2019s.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-196201\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Musicians-play-in-the-street-1024x766.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"467\" \/><\/li>\n<li><b>Teatro Colon<\/b> (Opera House) \u2013 This world famous building sits proudly on the very wide Avenida 9 de Juilo. The inside is breathtaking and a tour not only takes you into the auditorium and many rooms of the Opera House but gives you a great overview of the history of Buenos Aires at the time it was built. Tours in English on the hour, every hour lasting 50 mins from 09:00 \u2013 19:00 \u2013 ARG$130. (The entrance is on the left hand side of the building on Tucuman).<\/li>\n<li><b>San Telmo neighbourhood and its caf\u00e9s<\/b>\u00a0 &#8211; San Telmo is where the aging and young bohemians of Buenos Aires hang out. Traditionally where the upper classes lived until 1871 when a yellow fever out break drove them out. Nowadays you can still see some of the traditional 1800`s architecture, antique shops and sometimes tango in its square. There are also some great cafes &#8211; <i>La Poesia<\/i> \u2013 Chile\/Bolivar &amp; <i>El Federal<\/i> \u2013 Peru\/Carlos Calvo;\u00a0 Plaza Dorrego for people watching, some handicrafts and maybe some tango.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-196203\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Tango-dancers-at-the-San-Telmo-Market-1024x766.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"467\" \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Train Lovers\u2026..<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Metro Line C<\/b> \u2013 for metro lovers, the stations along these lines have some fantastic mosaics.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Retiro Station <\/b>\u2013 a grand old station with its tea rooms still running.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>5. <strong>Ecological Reserve<\/strong> \u2013 beyond Puerto Madero you find the extensive Ecological\u00a0reserve which is quite good for bird spotting and escaping the hustle and bustle of\u00a0the city. Take a pic-nic, plenty of water and watch the ships as they sail in and out\u00a0of the River Plate.<\/p>\n<p>6.<strong> Palermo neighbourhood<\/strong> \u2013 all within relative proximity to each other you can\u00a0head to Palermo (take metro line D and get off at Plaza Italia) and visit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Museo Evita<\/strong>, Lafinur 2988; open 11 \u2013 19, ARG$20.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MALBA<\/strong> (Museum of Latin American Art), Avda. Figueroa Alcorta 3415; open12 \u2013 20, ARG$45.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Palermo parks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Around Plazoleta Cortazar<\/strong> &#8211; Palermo Soho and Palermo Viejo is where all the\u00a0trendy young Porte\u00f1os can be found, quirky clothes shops, some great street\u00a0art and cafes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>7.<strong> Galerias Pacifico<\/strong> \u2013 a beautiful old shopping centre, on the busy (quite tacky)\u00a0pedestrianized street Florida but with this one great highlight &#8211; \u2013100% worth a\u00a0look inside.<\/p>\n<p>8.<strong> Puerto Madero<\/strong> \u2013 the newly developed dock yard is a great place for strolling and\u00a0also has 2 old naval ships docked in docks 3 &amp; 4 that you can visit.
