{"id":199080,"date":"2016-03-15T14:20:08","date_gmt":"2016-03-15T14:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.co.uk\/blog\/?p=199080"},"modified":"2020-04-01T15:13:01","modified_gmt":"2020-04-01T14:13:01","slug":"estancia-hopping-torres-del-paine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/estancia-hopping-torres-del-paine\/","title":{"rendered":"Estancia hopping in Torres del Paine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s not much that beats the thrill of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discovering Torres del Paine\u2019s rugged landscapes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/paine\/horse-riding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">horseback<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a method of travel that\u2019s been used in the region for hundreds of years and is still favoured today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September of last year, I had the pleasure of staying at one of Chile\u2019s biggest ranches, the Estancia Cerro Guido and one of Swoop\u2019s customers, Barbara, recently visited another Chilean ranch for a similar getaway. Here, we both give a little insight of our experiences of life as a Patagonian <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gaucho<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (cowboy).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOLANDSCAPE.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-199089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOLANDSCAPE.jpeg\" alt=\"SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOLANDSCAPE\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Luke:<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&nbsp;&#8220;For anyone who enjoys horse riding, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/paine\/horse-riding#estancia-cerro-guido\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estancia Cerro Guido<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the top spots in the region and offers a true slice of Patagonian history. You can experience life on a real working <em>estancia<\/em> (ranch), and head out with the gauchos to explore the surrounding <em>pampas <\/em>(grasslands). You can also ascend the peak of Cerro Guido from which the the estancia takes its name. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ranch is the hub of a vast estate that reaches out some 100,000 hectares (that\u2019s more or the less the size of a small county in the UK). It\u2019s still a working estancia employing and housing a number of gauchos and their families. So, alongside the 100 year old house of its founders, you\u2019ll also find<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;more modern accommodation, a church and a school for this local community.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOHORSE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-199088\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOHORSE.jpg\" alt=\"SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOHORSE\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOHORSE.jpg 5472w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOHORSE-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOHORSE-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOHORSE-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5472px) 100vw, 5472px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you book well in advance you can sleep in the old house, which is more museum than hotel, and will give you a wonderful sense of the lives of the people who originally owned and cultivated this land. There are some other rooms with ensuite bathrooms that are perfectly comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ll eat well in the dining room here (most of the food is grown \/ reared on the estate) but it&#8217;s the views out to the Paine Massif that I&#8217;ll always remember. This is a very special spot from which to see the sun set behind the famous towers of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/torres-del-paine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torres del Paine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOSKYLINE.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-199090\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOSKYLINE.png\" alt=\"SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOSKYLINE\" width=\"4461\" height=\"1727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOSKYLINE.png 4461w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOSKYLINE-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOSKYLINE-1024x396.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SWOOP_3_LUKE-ERRINGTON_ALL_CERROGUIDOSKYLINE-624x242.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4461px) 100vw, 4461px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, there are a number of reasons I\u2019d recommend this particular ranch:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It offers the chance to see how a large-scale ranch really works in Patagonia today and so is a \u201cmust-visit\u201d estancia for anyone horse riding in the Torres del Paine region. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a great place for a couple or a smaller group of friends to spend a final night in Torres del Paine, after hiking in the main part of the national park.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it\u2019s an authentic and convivial place in which to enjoy a private celebration; so ideal for a larger group ( 8-16 people) who want a night or two in their own place.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 100km south of Estancia Cerro Guido, on the Peninsula Antonio Varas you will find another classic Patagonian ranch, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/estancia-mercedes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estancia Mercedes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Swoop customer Barbara visited with her daughter in January of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before their horse-riding adventure, they stayed at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/singular-hotel-patagonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singular Hotel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a unique luxury hotel situated in a restored and renovated cold storage plant in Puerto Bories. After three nights at the Singular Hotel, my daughter and I went to Estancia Mercedes. While everything is fancier at the Singular, Estancia Mercedes is authentic.
