It really is another world down there, where you can be so perfectly free and alone with nature. I so often found myself&nbsp;gazing open mouthed&nbsp;at the breathtaking scenery before me: intimidating peaks, gargantuan&nbsp;glaciers, and curious creatures of all shapes and sizes, all the while&nbsp;experiencing&nbsp;exhilarating and ever-changing&nbsp;elements.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1535\/26102222740_982123ab63_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\"><em>Gazing up at&nbsp;FitzRoy &amp; down onto the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap at Piedra Negra.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Swoop&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/patagonian-wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wildlife<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/patagonia\/cruises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cruise<\/a> specialist, my trip in March 2016 naturally had a focus on creature spotting and adventures on water, as well as encompassing some of Patagonia&#8217;s iconic trekking routes. I crammed as much as possible into my three weeks:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/kayaking-in-patagonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kayaking<\/a> with sea lions and dolphins in the Magellan Strait,&nbsp;exploring the Chilean fjords, glaciers, and Cape Horn on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/australis-cruises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adventure cruise<\/a>, trekking the famous&nbsp;trails&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/los-glaciares\/trekking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Glaciares<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/torres-del-paine\/trekking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torres del Paine<\/a> National Parks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/perito-moreno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ice hiking<\/a>&nbsp;on Perito Moreno glacier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/patagonia\/horse-riding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">horse riding<\/a> gaucho style across the Patagonian steppe,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/whale-watching-cruise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humpback whale watching<\/a> in Francisco Coloane Marine Park, and&nbsp;a spot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/pumas-patagonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">puma&nbsp;tracking<\/a>, topped off with stays in incredible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/patagonia-hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hotels, lodges and eco camps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The longer I was there, the more I realised that Patagonia really has something for everyone, and the more that I saw, the more I realised there was left to see! Here&#8217;s the story of my journey&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25769626324_02745e017d_c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-199306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25769626324_02745e017d_c.jpg\" alt=\"25769626324_02745e017d_c\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25769626324_02745e017d_c.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25769626324_02745e017d_c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25769626324_02745e017d_c-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><em>Pia Glacier, Chilean Fjords.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a long journey, sweetened by bird\u2019s eye views of the volcanoes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/chilean-lakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chilean Lake District<\/a> from the plane, I finally touched down in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/landmark\/punta-arenas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Punta Arenas<\/a>, and began my Patagonian wildlife adventure. You can read here what my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/chloes-top-5-wildlife-experiences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Top 5 Wildlife Experiences <\/a>were, but looking back&nbsp;on the whole trip, I realise now that I saw so much more than I expected to, not just in the obvious places, but&nbsp;in moments when&nbsp;I least expected, like when a hairy armadillo popped&nbsp;out to say hello en route back to my&nbsp;hotel room!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25770455114_a9bdfe336b_c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-199307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25770455114_a9bdfe336b_c.jpg\" alt=\"25770455114_a9bdfe336b_c\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25770455114_a9bdfe336b_c.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25770455114_a9bdfe336b_c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/25770455114_a9bdfe336b_c-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><em>Hairy Armadillo, Calafate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My trip began with a few days exploring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-punta-arenas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Punta Arenas<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/kayaking-in-patagonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kayaking<\/a> along the Magellan Strait among seal lions and dolphins, before boarding an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/australis-cruises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adventure cruise<\/a> through the Chilean Fjords, down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/ushuaia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ushuaia<\/a>. I visited stunning glaciers&nbsp;and remote islands and forests&nbsp;that are largely unaccessible and untouched by humans, as well as getting to land on (a rather wet and windy) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/cape-horn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cape Horn<\/a>. Getting up close to a large&nbsp;colony of Magellanic penguins was one of the wildlife highlights of&nbsp;this trip,&nbsp;closely followed by&nbsp;three separate humpback whale sightings, and numerous birds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1669\/26397918285_8f555baafa_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\"><em>Views over Ainsworth Bay, Chilean&nbsp;fjords.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Next up was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/los-glaciares\/trekking#multiday-treks-mt-fitzroy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three day hike<\/a> on the iconic trails of Fitzroy and Cerro Torre loop, to Piedra Negra, Laguna de Los Tres, and Laguna Torre (where I was able to film a Magellanic Woodpecker up close), followed by an ice hike on Perito Moreno Glacier, and a stay at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/hotels-el-calafate#nearby-estancias-and-lodges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">luxury lodge near Calafate<\/a> for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/patagonia\/horse-riding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">horse riding<\/a>&nbsp;&#8230;and unexpected armadillo spotting!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1532\/26375597915_2355c2c92d_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\"><em>Perito Moreno glacier, post calving.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1669\/26309353591_a6735df76b_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\"><em>Perito Moreno Glacier &#8211; ice cave.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1541\/26282950972_d4f3f6bd56_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\"><em>Horse riding at a luxury lodge near El Calafate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1718\/26282883112_469d2c0d11_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\"><em>Fitzroy at sunrise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1494\/26283002442_f36a5336aa_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\"><em>In front of Fitzroy&nbsp;at Laguna de los Tres.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As if I hadn&#8217;t been lucky enough with unexpected whale sightings already, the next part of my trip took me to to Francisco Coloane Marine Park for a dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/whale-watching-cruise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humpback whale watching trip<\/a>. After braving the choppy waters rounding&nbsp;the Froward Cape, we arrived in this very special area of sheltered channels in the Chilean Fjords, where hundreds of humpback whales come to feed between the months of December to April.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26102711680_9ce7d44526_c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-199308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26102711680_9ce7d44526_c.jpg\" alt=\"26102711680_9ce7d44526_c\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26102711680_9ce7d44526_c.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26102711680_9ce7d44526_c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26102711680_9ce7d44526_c-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>Humpback Whale breaching, Francisco Coloane Marine Park.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To be bobbing around in tranquil waters, surrounded by up to 20 whales at a time, breaching, spraying water into the air, and showing off their tail flukes, within metres of our boat, was a truly&nbsp;magical&nbsp;experience that will stay with me forever.&nbsp;A huge harem of sea lions collecting around a humungously hariy and intimidating alpha male was one of the additional wildlife treats of this trip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1524\/26282303022_3013552fc7_k_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\"><em>Alpha sea lion and his harem in the&nbsp;Chilean Fjords.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, it was off to Torres del Paine, for some long awaiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/pumas-patagonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">puma spotting<\/a>. I was greeted on arrival by enormous herds of guanacos, peacefully grazing with the stunning backdrop of the towers, and with just one early morning and one late afternoon scheduled for puma spotting, my adventure ended with two separate sightings in 5 minutes &#8211; two females, each with cubs &#8211; what a privilege.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26374556025_e2341afe26_c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-199309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26374556025_e2341afe26_c.jpg\" alt=\"26374556025_e2341afe26_c\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26374556025_e2341afe26_c.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26374556025_e2341afe26_c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.swoop-patagonia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/26374556025_e2341afe26_c-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>Puma female, Torres del Paine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Based from several different hotels, eco camps and luxury lodges, I then explored the iconic hiking trails of Torres del Paine, trekking&nbsp;to the Grey Glacier, and the famous towers with some <em>gaucho<\/em> led horse-riding across the steppe.
