When you visit a place that\u2019s sometimes described as a new frontier in travel, it can sometimes be hard to know what to expect. You can look at an itinerary but struggle to conjure in your mind what you\u2019ll be experiencing \u2013 not just the scenery and the views, but the feeling<\/em> of the trail, how hard your legs will ache and what sort of atmosphere you\u2019ll wake up to every morning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was definitely the case on my most recent trip to Tierra del Fuego, to test out two remote treks in the wilds of the Patagonian backcountry. My first trek, the dramatic Dientes de Navarino, I\u2019ve written about in another Swoop blog<\/a>. That at least had the advantage of coming with its own tagline: the southernmost trek in the world. But my second adventure, Trekking Deep in Tierra del Fuego<\/a> felt like a different ball game, heading into landscapes few have ever hiked across.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crossing a glacier into the wilderness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My trip began in Ushuaia<\/a>, the low-slung city on the Beagle Channel<\/a> that\u2019s rebranding itself as Argentina\u2019s adventure travel gateway<\/a> to Tierra del Fuego. Dark green mountains rose up behind it, and I wondered what secrets they were holding. At the briefing night before I set out with my fellow hikers, our guide Marine gave us an idea of what to expect \u2013 or rather, what not<\/em> to expect on the four days we\u2019d be hiking. The route we\u2019d be hiking was known as Sierra Valdivieso Circuit, but it wasn\u2019t going to be anything like other treks I\u2019d done like Torres del Paine\u2019s O Circuit<\/a> or the Huemul Circuit <\/a>in Los Glaciares. It would be just as physically challenging as those, but except for the first couple of hours on the first day, we wouldn\u2019t be following a marked trail at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dutifully, we\u2019d all packed our rucksacks to prepare for several nights of wild camping, but Marine also promised that amid the tough terrain we could also expect a nice surprise about halfway through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We set out the next morning to drive to the trailhead Laguna Esmeralda, a popular dayhiking destination from Ushuaia, where mountains ring a gorgeous milky blue glacial lake. Most people linger here for lunch, but we instead followed a path that wove upwards through the forest to a rocky moraine to meet the tongue of Ojo del Albino \u2013 the glacier whose meltwater feeds the lake. From here, whatever path we took would be one we\u2019d make ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our chosen route was one that required extra equipment. Crampons, helmets and ice axes were pulled from rucksacks and prepared: we weren\u2019t going to go around the glacier, we were going to go across it, each of us roped together for safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an hour and a half, we slowly picked our way across the ice, using our axes to steady ourselves until we faced a sharp descent on the other side of its face. Marine guided us all with care. There was a terrific sense of achievement when we all stood together on the rocks on the far side of the glacier. I wondered what the daytrippers at the lake had thought of us disappearing into the ice \u2013 it felt like we\u2019d crossed a threshold of kinds, into the unknown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hidden lodge on Lake Fagnano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We spent that first night wild camping below the treeline, after a steep descent from Ojo del Albino. The landscape was truly untamed \u2013 crossing the turba<\/em> (peat bog), and a series of creeks with a series of beaver dams. The going was flat, but unexpectedly tiring, as the soft peat below our feet absorbed our footsteps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a long day, but the landscape was rich in views, with the mountains above us and the forests a mixture of green and gold, dotted with the bleached white skeletons of trees where the beavers had done their work. Still, I was happy when the ground started to rise again as we made our way up to the Beban Pass. From here, we looked down into a long and beautiful green-blue fjord, which was a side arm of Lake Fagnano, Tierra del Fuego\u2019s biggest lake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time we had descended to the shore, there was a small boat hauled up on the beach waiting for us. On a windy day, it wouldn\u2019t have been able to safely land, and we\u2019d have been faced with another two hours of walking. Instead, we unwound for 30 minutes as the boat ferried across the water and pulled into a small bay. And waiting for us there was the surprise that Marine had promised us: a secluded lodge called Los Renos Cabins, hidden in its own paradise.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As surprises go, this was one that had our faces plastered with big grins. There was a big stone hearth, huge windows to let in the views, and even a hot tub out on the deck. Inside, it felt more like a home than a cabin miles away from the nearest road. Soon enough, our boots were drying out by the fire, and we were enjoying a home-cooked meal with a glass of wine, then an hour of sitting on the deck enjoying the perfect stillness of the landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crossing the Valdivieso Valley<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On a regular trek we would have spent two nights here, with a full day at the lodge to explore and relax \u2013 hiking by the lake, bird watching, or even grabbing a rod and line to try a little fishing. It was tempting to linger just to enjoy the freshly-baked bread we had at breakfast for another day, but our itinerary meant that soon enough the boat was pulling up to ferry us to another part of the Lake Fagnano shoreline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were dropped at the entrance of the Valdivieso Valley, which offered up the most beautiful day of hiking. All day. We wove in and out of a classic Patagonian forest of lenga, nirre and coihue trees, which would then break out for wide mountain views. For the whole day it felt like we were surrounded by water. We climbed a series of plateaus that rose above the valley floor, and each one was punctuated by a waterfall or a small lagoon. You would turn around to look back at the valley and the lake behind you, then press forwards and up to the next level, and another waterfall or lagoon. Every single one was amazing \u2013 as was the skill of our guide in finding a trail for us to follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near the end of the day, we crossed a tricky little pass called the French Pass, where I had to use my hands for guidance on the rocks as much as my feet. Then it was back down below the treeline again to look for a suitable clearing to pitch our tents. After such a long day, my sleeping bag and mat felt as comfortable as any lakeside lodge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patagonian savannah meets wetlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There was no obvious trail to follow to get out of the forest, and we spent the morning bushwhacking. I\u2019ve led dozens of guided hikes in Torres del Paine, but I\u2019d have been lost among the trees if it hadn\u2019t been for Marine\u2019s unerring sense of direction. This was proper adventure hiking, often having to fight against the trees, or pause to unhook the loop of your rucksack that had been caught on a branch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then we broke out of the forest into a landscape that I\u2019d never seen anywhere in all my travels across Patagonia. The mountains seemed to have fallen back to create a great flat space that was very very different from the pampa grasslands \u2013 it almost felt like the African savannah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Underfoot, it felt different too. It was all peat. We\u2019d had a little taste of hiking on peatland on the first day, but the big open skies here made it feel very different. There were reeds growing everywhere, with little creeks and rivulets and lots of birds. Although it felt very different to the Patagonia I\u2019m so familiar with, as we picked our way through the landscape, Marine reminded us how important ecosystems like this are \u2013 not just locally but globally. Peatlands are vital carbon sinks<\/a>, and those in Patagonia some of the most pristine and precious on the planet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually we reached the edge of another forest, where a real trail miraculously appeared from the trees: an abandoned logging road. After our time in the wilderness it almost felt like a four-lane highway. At the end, a 4WD was waiting for us, with hot coffee and cold beer. It was a good way to end the hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflections on trekking in Tierra del Fuego<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Arriving back at a hotel after any multi-day hike always feels like something of a surprise, but more than most, this trek stood out for its isolation. On the four days we were on the trail, we only saw a single other hiker. He was clearly someone looking for adventure, as we were hiking in places with no trails and no defined route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What made that more remarkable was that throughout the entire hike, we were never really that far (as the condor flies) from Ushuaia. That\u2019s not a feeling you can get if you were to base yourself in Puerto Natales<\/a> or Serrano Village<\/a> for Torres del Paine<\/a>, or El Chalt\u00e9n <\/a>for Los Glaciares<\/a>. That\u2019s a very special feeling \u2013 especially to be able to leave a city, and so quickly find yourself crossing a glacier like Ojo de Albino. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the biggest surprise was the one that Marine promised would delight us so much. The cabin on the shores of Lake Fagnano. The days on the trek were long and testing as all the best walking days are, so to have the nights of wild camping punctuated by what felt like the luxury of a rustic lodge really was an unexpected delight. Although our group has pushed on to complete the circuit, being able to spend an extra day in the lodge is an extra trick to allow hikers to step outside the itinerary and spend some time resting in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circular treks don\u2019t often afford a treat like that, but it\u2019s a concept I found myself fully in favour of. Next time, I\u2019m going to bring a thick book to read on the deck while drinking my mate, only putting them down to enjoy the silent views of the lake and the mountains. And then, fully restored, I’ll pick up that heavy rucksack again, and press on into the wilderness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
