What was your most memorable moment?

Our three day trek around El Chalten and our two hikes in Torres Del Paine. And our trip to the Moreno glacier was a close second.

Tell us about Patagonia Camp

Great food. Great guides. Cool setting. But to spend time in Paine, we left at 7am and came back at 7 or 8pm. Ultimately it was a pretty expensive place to have a nice dinner and sleep.

Something Else?

I made a mistake on the hotel choice in Buenos Aires. It was too far away from the main center of the city and while SoHo was cool, we could have visited once or twice. The bike tour in Buenos Aires was great. I really didn’t like the fact that the Tango dinner was far from our hotel, and that the restaurant made all of the transportation arrangements, which made it difficult to communicate and make revisions. Swoop was two steps removed. I would have rather been in control of my own transportation. The Santiago hotel too was too far from the main part of the city. A very nice neighborhood and cool access to the river side parks. But we had a 30+ minute Uber every time we went somewhere. Hotels in El Chalten and El Calafate were probably the best in the area. They were well located and relatively new. I wish we had a list of restaurants (and even perhaps a little help) so we could have had a reservation or two in place before we arrived. The hotels were surprisingly not very knowledgeable or very helpful. As a result we did not have very good meals in either Buenos Aires or Santiago. It would have been nice if you had checked in once or twice to see how things were going.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?

Buenos Aires and Santiago are 2 1/2-3 day cities, max. We spent about 4 1/2 days in each one. I wish we had spent more time trekking. I would have then spent a few nights at Refugio Laguna Condor and spent a day fly fishing farther north, spent a day kayaking and perhaps doing another day hike. These kinds of locations are great for families because they give people of lot of choices on what they can do. I would stay closer to Torres del Paine and perhaps even in the park. We were 5 days at Camp Patagonia and went into the park twice, did a full day hike on site and did a day long guided fly fishing. All of which actually would have been better if we were closer to or in the park.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

I need to go back to Patagonia. We just saw and experienced a small sliver.

How prepared and excited for Patagonia did you feel?

Prepared for Patagonia, not so much for Buenos Aires and Santiago. Have dreamt about being at the base of Fitz Roy for a long time.
