Tell us about Chilean Lakes

Chiloe Island was for me very disappointing, having said that the hotel on stilts in Castro was probably my favourite because of the novelty. Having come from vibrant Valparaiso, everything was closed and it felt like a very sleepy backwater. Having come from the UK where we have some lovely countryside, I just didn’t feel it offered anything and we struggled to find any decent walks as the parks aren’t clearly marked

Tell us about the Fishing

The fishing was incredible, probably the main highlight for Toby. The second day was quite scary as you were going down big rapids so not for the faint hearted. Just a really small point, please could you let people know that they are expected to pay a big tip on top.

Something Else?

A big thank you to Carys, for helping us out with the USD’s. Having been so strict about using safes in hotels whilst we were in South Africa. We arrived at Hotel Fauna in Valparaiso and I couldn’t find the safe in the room, it was actually hidden under the bed (found it as we were leaving). Having used a safe immediately in all subsequent hotels for our passports, money etc. I was upset to find that 150 USD had been taken from my bag left in the room at Hotel Fauna. Thankfully, they didn’t take my passport and we had split our cash up between the two of us. I searched high and low for the missing currency and was hoping that I would get home to find it on the bed, but unfortunately not.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?

To make the most of the amazing countryside get as fit as you can. Do lots of research in the UK around the hiking and exactly where the trails are, they don’t make it easy for you.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

It’s been like visiting another world, the trip has been tiring at times, 13 hotels in just under 4 weeks, but it has been worth it. It has changed my perspective with regard to what I really need, life is very simple out there.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

Carys was brilliant, and the teams on the ground great too.

How prepared and excited for Patagonia did you feel?

Excited, though not particularly well prepared, as I have been organising a series of multiple trips this year, and only really got into the real detail of what we were doing about 6 weeks before we went.
