Something Else?
My one suggestion is you provide much more explicit information about expected tipping. We were not provided any information about the level of tipping that would be expected at the Eco camps. And coming from Argentina you have no place between El Calafate and the camp to stop and get Chilean pesos. I think this is a big miss on your end. You should be very clear with people about how much cash they might need to bring to tip at the camps. This is especially important because the camp provides no way to tip other than via cash. You are expected to tip each guide and you're expected to provide a pool the tip for the camp staff. We felt terrible because we just did not have enough cash to tip at the level we felt should have been appropriate for the service we received. I organize trips to Kenya and I am extremely explicit around tipping ranges and expectations and where people can get cash and what type of cash they need to get as part of trip preparations. I'd suggest you add this to your information. This is really the only area of improvement I have for you to consider. Everything else was amazing and I've already recommended your services to several people.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?
Bring plenty of cash for tipping. Know in Chile they don't take Argentinian pesos. We packed for much colder weather, which was the usual but it ended up being quite warm. I know you have this in your information, but the layering is critically important - layering for warm to cold. I'd also let people know that there can be a lot of driving based on what hikes you pick. We weren't really prepared for two hours each direction in some cases.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
No. I've done a lot of traveling around the world. I've stayed in lots of different types of camps. I've been on actual Safaris... But every trip reminds me of how beautiful the world is and how wonderful the people are.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
One issue I had was whomever was on the Chilean side of our trip. Forgot to send us our park passes so we were scrambling to get those as we were entering the park. I had received all our passes from someone working on the Argentinian side, which was great. When I reached out to them about our passes to enter Torres Del Paine, they told me they only handled Argentina and not Chile and didn't give me any help in figuring out who I needed to reach out to. Luckily I had my printed itinerary and was able to reach someone via WhatsApp who quickly sent the passes. A minor miss but just something to keep in mind - I was not told I had separate contacts between Argentina and Chile - knowing that in advance would have been helpful and reduced confusion as I was trying to get our passes. As would have having received our passes in advance of our arrival at the park. Again, this was minor. Overall, I can't say enough about how great it was to work with your team.
How prepared and excited for Patagonia did you feel?
Very prepared and excited ( minus the tipping issue). Also, I just want to shout out the driver who took us from El Calafate to the Eco camp. He was incredible. We stopped along the way to take pictures and enjoy viewpoints. He was delightful.
