If you’re looking to unwind after the buzz of Buenos Aires, there can be no better place than an estancia. These traditional ranches are home for the gaucho, the iconic cowboy of Argentinian culture. Go horseriding, eat good food or just relax by the pool in the heart of the pampas.

Time for mate and asado at an estancia
Estancias are some of the best places you can stay in Argentina. These ranches are bastions of traditional culture that are truly destinations in themselves, where you can switch off and immerse yourself in the nation’s gaucho culture.
Whichever one you choose to stay at you’ll have the wide open lands of the pampas to explore. To help you do this, estancias offer their own guides and are set up for horseback riding, hiking trails, and mountain biking – or just relaxing in absolute comfort. In many ways, they’re Argentina’s original all-inclusives.
The estancias around Buenos Aires don’t offer the true remoteness of their Patagonian cousins in Los Glaciares—the landscapes here are dominated by the soft hills and grasslands of the pampas, rather than wild mountains—but their easy access to the city makes them an ideal escape into nature.
Whether you want more of a traditional working ranch or one to focusing more on luxury tourism, Swoop Patagonia’s specialists have spent time at every estancia we offer and know them inside out, so you can trust us to find the perfect one for your trip.
La Bandada is a beautifully restored early 20th century estancia in the heart of the pampas, 120 km (75 miles) south of Buenos Aires – about two hours by private transfer.
Time here can be spent exploring the countryside by horse, bike or foot, then relaxing over an asado dinner. With just nine double rooms on offer, a stay here is full of intimate charm and tailored service.
As well as learning about gaucho culture here, it's also possible to connect with another great pillar of Argentinian equine culture, by taking polo lessons on a trained criollo horse – and even playing a chukka.

La Bamba de Areco is one of the oldest estancias in Argentina, and is centred on an elegant 18th century colonial mansion.
Guests can go horseriding with a gaucho guide, or saddle up to explore by bicycle. For those wanting to take things a little easier, this Relais & Chateaux property offers excellent food and a well-stocked wine cellar.
The nearby town of San Antonio de Areco, is often considered the birthplace of gaucho culture, and remains home to many artisans working in leather and silver in traditional gaucho designs.
Estancia La Bamba de Areco is 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Buenos Aires – around two hours by private transfer.

Adding an estancia stay on to your itinerary trip is one of the best ways to connect with Argentina's culture and history – the lush pampas of the estancias here is a refreshing contrast to both the wilds of Patagonia and the pulsing energy of Buenos Aires.
