Pumalin National Park

Along the northern half of the Carretera Austral, Pumalin National Park lies between Hornopiren and Chaiten.  It can be accessed by road from either of these towns, by boat through Caleta Gonzalo, or from Argentina via the Paso de Menendez.

Pumalin was designated by the government as a nature sanctuary in 2005 and is Chile's largest private nature reserve. There are many trails for hiking and grounds for camping amid untouched Valdivian temperate rainforest that is home to thousands of species and sub-species of flora and fauna, as well as some of the last remaining Alerce trees (one of the oldest species on Earth!). The Park is accessible by car from Chaiten and by ferry from Hornopiren, docking at Caleta Gonzalo at the very centre of the Park.
