Operator's Itinerary
Day 1: Punta Arenas - Puerto Natales
Collect your hire car in Punta Arenas. Take some time to explore the southernmost city of the American continent, sitting on the edge of the Strait of Magellan. The city has witnessed European exploration, colonisation and cultural conflict with indigenous peoples, as well as becoming a gateway to Antarctica. Sites of interest include the main square with its grand monument to Magellan, the Naval and Maritime Museum, the Nao Victoria Museum, the Patagonian Institute and, of course, the city's south-facing coastline which looks onto Tierra del Fuego.
Once you are ready, set off and drive north to Puerto Natales where you can plan your next two days exploring Torres del Paine.
Length of self-drive: 3 hours, 250 km
Accommodation: Hotel, Puerto Natales
Day 2: Puerto Natales - Torres del Paine
The drive to Torres del Paine National Park will take you deep into the Patagonian wilderness travelling through pampa grass steppe, typical of the region. Many people choose to stop at the Milodon Cave national monument just 15 kilometres out of Puerto Natales where scientists discovered the remains of a gigantic prehistoric sloth. Continue north into Torres del Paine, one of the world's most remarkable national parks where you are met by majestic mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes and rivers. Either check in at your hotel or spend the full day exploring.
Due to the size of the park, we recommend that you focus on a different area each day. You may want to challenge yourself by doing one of the epic hikes from the W Trek, such as the world-class hike into the Ascencio Valley and up to the Base of the Towers viewpoint. Alternatively, enjoy more frequent stops with shorter hikes to various lookouts.
