Operator's Itinerary

Day 1:

Check in to our seaside lodge in time for lunch. Afterwards, we will enjoy a walking tour around the historic local town. We will also visit the area where wild seaweed is harvested and processed. Here we will learn about how seaweed is turned from a raw material into a variety of different natural products.

In the afternoon, we will enjoy a 4x4 drive to reach Aristizabal Cape, an important rockery cape, which is characterised by its imposing landscape. Along the way, apart from enjoying the beautiful coastal landscape, we will also be able to observe all kinds of Steppe fauna. Once we reach Aristizabal Lighthouse, we will trek to see Sea Lions, which usually rest here. This is also a nesting area for a variety of marine birds.

We will then return to our seaside lodge for dinner.

Day 2:

After breakfast, we will assess the weather forecast to see whether sailing is possible. Assuming all is well, we'll board the boat and sail along the seaweed fields where we'll come across vessels working on the seaweed harvest. Later we'll sail over the mussel crops and we'll learn about the growing of mussels.

Then we will approach the Roca Malaspina and continue sailing down the archipelago made up of the Vernacci Islands. While sailing, we will come across Sea Lion colonies (3,500 animals during the breeding season), Penguins (100,000) and colourful marine bird colonies. Then we moor the boat and return to the village for lunch.

In the afternoon, we will explore Gravina Peninsula, a 70 km Peninsula of sandy beaches, crystal clear water and reddish rocks. We'll enjoy a combination of 4x4 wheel driving and trekking. If the tide is low, natural swimming pools are formed in the rocks which are ideal to take a bath if the weather is good.

Afterwards, we will visit Penguin Island: Just 15 minutes away from the town by 4x4, this island is home to a small colony of Magellan Penguins. During low tide it is possible to reach the island on foots, giving us the privilege of observing penguins and their nests up close.

Day 3:

After breakfast, we'll take the 4x4's across our private land, driving almost 18 miles until we arrive to the Petrified Forest.

We will visit an archaeological site dating back 60 millions years. We will walk to the "Pyramid" which is a nice spot to appreciate the silence and vastness of this area.

We'll return to the village to have lunch.

In the afternoon, we will visit the estancia to learn about wool production. The seaside lodge is part of a group of 3 Estancias which add up more than 80,000 hectares. In Estancia Las Mercedes you will learn about how the sheep are cared for by observing shearing, weaning, classification or marking of the sheep.
