Excursions

Excursions strike the perfect balance between adventure, nature, and local culture. Explore each of the habitats that create an immense biodiversity unique to the region, and immerse yourself in local history and traditions.

Observe dolphins, whales, and penguins in the bay and spot the elusive puma and pudú deer in the woods. Enjoy a swim under the stars after a day of hiking, and take to the water aboard one of Mari Mari’s boats. Whatever your preferences, the resident guides will apply their expertise to ensure a personalised experience for each guest.

Hiking

Mari Mari offers a wide range of coastal and rainforest trails that allow you to explore the diverse areas within the reserve, each one with its own unique scenery, habitats, and highlights.

Half-day and full-day trails are available daily, suitable for hikers of all levels, and specially-trained guides accompany each, sharing their enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the native flora and fauna. Detailed trail maps mean that you can independently explore some of the reserve’s 9,000 acres whenever you wish, at a pace that suits you.

Horse Riding

The stables are home to the beautifully-groomed horses that are well-suited for all levels of riding confidence. They operate with twelve well-trained and docile horses for guests, all fitted with premium Chilean saddles, bridles, and reigns. Helmets, gloves, and chaps are provided.

On each ride you will marvel at the impressive coastline and untouched virgin forest while a naturalist guide highlights the unique vegetation and wildlife species, experiencing the sights and sounds as you make your way across large stretches of the reserve. In addition, you can visit local "huasos" (cowboys) to learn about local legends, riding techniques, and enjoy an anecdote or two.

Local Tours

Guests can enjoy in-depth cultural experiences with visits to patrimonial churches, archaeological highlights, and neighbouring communities among others. Each of these activities is designed to offer unique insights into the history and culture of Northern Patagonia.

A range of organic and culinary tours are also on offer and include visits to Mari Mari’s greenhouse and demonstrations of how local farmers work these fertile grounds. You will have the chance to taste fresh organic fruits and vegetables from the garden or you can personally choose the ingredients Chef Flores will transform into a culinary delight.

Water Sports and Fishing

Water-based adventures afford intimate opportunities with the most noble of the ocean’s creatures in this section of the Pacific Ocean. Depending on weather conditions and the season, you can venture out to visit penguin colonies, crowded sea lion isles, and migratory lanes for the Humpback and Blue whales.

Experience a relaxed and contemplative trip on the hotel's boat, and combine with different perspectives of the coastal eco-system through kayaking and stand up paddle boarding (SUP). All appropriate safety equipment and instructions are given for each, and expert guides excitedly help you to identify the magnificent marine life.

This area of the South Pacific Ocean is also renowned for its abundance of saltwater fish, many of which fall in the category of game species. You'll have the opportunity to practice surf fishing from the shore or join in a deep-sea adventure with Vertical Jigging.

About Mari Mari

Location

Located in a relatively little-known coastal region of Chilean Patagonia, Mari Mari is both remote and well connected. The hotel itself sits on 13 miles of unspoiled Pacific coastline and within 9,000 acres of Northern Patagonian land. Los Muermos is the nearest village, while popular destinations such as Puerto Varas and Chiloe Island are close by.

There is also the option to book a helicopter flight from Puerto Montt to the hotel, a scenic 20-minute journey. Flights from Santiago to Puerto Montt are 1 hour 40 minutes, and from Punta Arenas to Puerto Montt 2 hours. This makes it easy to combine the stay with other destinations in Chile.

History

Mari Mari embeds the long-lost culture of Monte Verde at the heart of it's values. The Monte Verde culture lived at one with the natural environment, making as little impact and leaving as small a footprint as possible, building no temples or pyramids. Their heritage was unravelled with the discovery of a small child's footprint in 1975 in a marshy field near the city of Puerto Montt; evidence of human settlement in the Americas that pre-dated the long-accepted Clovis paradigm by roughly 1,000 years.

This legacy of the Monte Verde permeates Mari Mari's practices, rousing a lifestyle of harmony with the wildlife and vegetation that is found in this magical region. It sets a benchmark of respect and inspires a community of responsibility, which visitors are welcomed into.

The ancient settlement of Monte Verde exists close to Mari Mari and a fascinating tour of the site led by an American anthropologist can be booked.
