Glaciar Grande

The huge Glaciar Grande is one of the many glaciers in Los Glaciares National Park to come down from the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap. The glacier, which runs into the pale Laguna Torre, is relatively easily accessible.

The trek up to the glacier from El Chalten is an enjoyable one which leads you along the picturesque Rio Fitz Roy, which, like the famous Mount Fitz Roy, is named after the captain of the HMS Beagle on Darwin's voyage through Patagonia.

It's possible to don a pair of crampons and ice hike on this impressive glacier, but only with a guide. From here you'll have spectacular views to the north of the long glacial tongue of Glacier Torre and Cerro Torre standing at some 3,102 metres.
