Day 2 - Cape Horn Scenic Flight

Transfer to an airfield for the unique experience of a flight over Cape Horn. Before flying over Nassau Bay you first admire the massif of the Dientes de Navarino, the peat-lands on the island with the same name, and then the isolated and magnificent Wollanston Islands. Leave these islands behind to reach Hornos Island which we fly over at an altitude of just 1000ft. At its southern end we can see the legendary Cape Horn, a giant rock of about 400m height, facing the worst and hardest tides coming from the Drake Sea. At this point, you will only be 500km (312 miles) away from the Antarctic Peninsula.  We will also fly over the northeast tip of Hornos Island, where you can see the lighthouse and its keeper’s house, as well as the famous Cape Horn monument. This monument represents a gigantic silhouette of an albatross, the eternal companion of the brave solitary navigators.

The flight will be operated on a Twin-Otter aircraft or on a helicopter, depending on the size of the group.

Since it’s not possible to provide major information during the flight, a briefing about the importance of Cape Horn will be held in the lodge beforehand.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Accommodation: Lakutaia Lodge

Day 3 - Excursions

Choose from any of the excursions below:

• Trek to Dientes de Navarino viewpoint (Bandera Hill)

This excursion will lead you to the base of the Dientes de Navarino massif, where you will enjoy an overwhelming view of the Beagle Channel and Puerto Williams, surrounded by nature in its greatest splendour. Among forests and grasslands, you can walk the well-marked 3.5km (2 mile) trail, noticing the changes in habitat; the initial dense and wooded environment becomes an alpine ecosystem, mostly populated by lichens, mosses and other species adapted to wind and low temperatures. During this excursion you will also learn about native flora such as orchids and local wild fruits. A light snack is included.

Difficulty: Moderate, 4.5 - 5hrs

• Horseback ride

Experience horseback riding at the southernmost edge of the world for 2 hours (or longer if desired), passing by sub-Antarctic forests and bordering the Beagle Channel. (This excursion includes all equipment, and is suitable for participants with previous basic experience.)

Difficulty: Easy, 2hrs

• Kayak

Enjoy a unique kayaking and rowing adventure along the sounds and bays of the Beagle Channel, which has been navigated by canoe nomads since ancient times. Sail along the Lauta and Micalvi sounds, bordering the Punta Gusanos coast, home to thousands of gulls and several species of geese. Pass by a fishing cove and the Micalvi pier, the landing site of many ocean sailboats. All equipment is included (neoprene suit, gloves, ankle boots, waterproof protector, life vest), along with snacks and a certified expedition guide. (Previous kayaking and swimming experience is not required for this excursion.)

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate, 2.5 - 3hrs

• Bird watching hike to Punta Gusano

You will take a brief transfer to the starting point of the hike. The excursion takes in the peninsula at the north end of Puerto Williams Bay, offering exclusive views of Puerto Williams and the Beagle Channel. This narrow piece of land at the end of the peninsula is the nesting site for thousands of Dominican and Austral gulls, pilpilen (oystercatchers), and many geese species. Prepare for an emotional and close encounter with the winged multitudes! (The breeding season runs from the second half of November to the beginning of March.)

Difficulty: Easy, 2hrs

All activities and excursions are subject to weather conditions.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Accommodation: Lakutaia Lodge

Day 4 - Return transfer

Transfer out by the same method as you arrived, either to Punta Arenas by plane or to Ushuaia by boat.
