Operator's Itinerary

Day 1: Ancud - Punihuil - Castro

You will be met at the bus terminal in Ancud, and then you will drive west to visit Punihuil on the Pacific side of the main island. This is a group of islands that serve as breeding habitat for Magellanic and Humboldt penguins as well as many other marine birds. You will pay a visit to the penguin colony by zodiac boats. After the picnic lunch, drive to Castro in the interior of the archipelago, and arrive at the picturesque stilt house hostel. Dinner in a nice sea front restaurant.

Day 2:  Castro - sea kayak in Dalcahue Channel - Castro

In the morning, take a transfer to the sea kayaking centre near the cultural port of Dalcahue. You will enjoy a full day of sea kayaking, paddling in the Dalcahue Channel. You can expect to see great numbers of local seabirds including black-necked swans, three kinds of seagulls, oystercatchers, grebes. Then continue across the channel to Quinchao island, for a visit to the lovely San Xavier church and cemetery; you will enjoy a picnic lunch. For the rest of the afternoon, visit various picturesque locations along the channel, until you finally return to the sea kayak centre. In the evening, drive back to Castro for dinner and lodging in the hostel.

Day 3: Castro - San Juan - Tenaun - Mechuque Island

This morning you will drive to the picturesque fishing village of San Juan with its famous shipyards and wooden church. From here paddle north, visiting seaside hamlets, until you get to the town of Tenaun in order to catch a motorised vessel and cross to Mechuque in the little archipelago of Chauques. Dinner and lodging will be in a family house in this beautiful town.

Day 4: Mechuque - Anihue - Taucolon - Voigue

Today, start early for a full day of sea kayaking among the waterways and islands of Mechuque, Voigue, Anihue and Taucolon, visiting villages and churches as you go. Pay special attention to the traditional culture of this area, celebrated in the songs and dances of Chilean folklore. In particular, look out for palafito stilt houses with brightly coloured fishing boats tied up in their 'basements'. In the evening, return to Mechuque for dinner and lodging in the guest house

Day 5: Mechuque - Tenaun - Colo - Aucar - Quemchi - Ancud

Cross back to Tenaun in a vessel and drive a beautiful coastal road in the interior of the main island, visiting cultural highlights and villages such as Colo, Aucar, and Quemchi, before you get to Ancud in order to catch the bus back to Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas.
