4-Day W Trek

Hike the full W Trek in just four days. This trip includes a boat ride across Lake Grey, trekking in the French Valley and along the shore of Lake Nordenskjöld, plus the iconic hike to the Base of the Towers. You'll be in a small group, staying at reufgios along the way and always accompanied by an experienced mountain guide.

Are you hoping to travel before January 2023?

Patagonia's a big trip and we know how crucial it is to get it right. As you’re considering travelling in the next couple of months, we want to be upfront with you…

Finding available accommodation is proving almost impossible in Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Parks. While not uncommon, the pandemic has exacerbated the situation this year.

Alongside this, Swoop are also currently focused on ensuring that all of the logistics are in place for our booked travellers who are due to head south shortly.

Swoop has therefore decided to no longer accept any new bookings departing before the beginning of January 2023.

As alternative options, here’s what we suggest:

Option A:

Push your trip back and choose to travel instead in early 2023. Feb - April in particular has more accommodation options still available. The Patagonian autumnal colours are stunning and trails less crowded.

Option B:

Defer your Patagonia adventure by 12 months, benefitting by getting exactly the trip you want without compromise, and lock in plans now while there’s still good availability.

If you are able to be flexible on your travel dates, the next step would then be for us to arrange a time to talk through the options.

Day 2: Transfer to Hotel Grey; Boat trip; Trek to Glacier Grey; Refugio Paine Grande

Today you will be transferred into the national park and enjoy a boat trip across Lake Grey before beginning your first hike on the famous W Trek.

The trail will take you closer and closer to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, and the vast Glacier Grey. You’ll stop at viewpoints, taking lunch along the way, as your guide explains the magnificent landscapes that you are hiking through. When your guide determines (depending on the speed of the group and the weather conditions), you’ll hike to Refugio Paine Grande where you can rest up before dinner. The total distance of today's hike is variable.

Refugio meals are usually lively events where all nationalities of hikers gather, exchange travel experiences, and reflect on trekking in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

Today you’ll follow the edge of Cerro Paine Grande through the middle section of the W Trek. Along this trail, the Cuernos or 'horns' will be your guide as you edge closer and closer to them - a truly stunning sight!

You will explore the French Valley, considered by many to be the most spectacular region of the whole park, as you leave your heavier packs at the start of the valley. After reaching the French valley viewpoint you will be surrounded by the wildly beautiful, rugged mountains!

Follow the same path back down, pick up your backpack and continue to Refugio Los Cuernos.

Day 4: Trek along Lake Nordenskjöld; Refugio Chileno

Today's hiking is a little gentler than yesterday’s as you follow the base of the Almirante Nieto Mountain, with the imposing Cuernos (the horns) of Paine to one side, and the beautiful Lake Nordenskjöld to the other. This section of the ‘W Trek’ has great panoramic views and is an exciting place to try to spot the elusive Andean condor!

This afternoon we’ll arrive at Refugio Chileno to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s final trek to the base of the towers.

Day 5: Trek to the base of the Towers; Puerto Natales

This truly iconic day-hike is a wonderful way to end our experience hiking the ‘W Trek’ in Torres del Paine. This testing, yet fascinating trek follows the Ascencio River, undulating through forests and rising high into the valley to the base of the colossal towers.

You will have lunch at this incredible spot, admiring the view of the towers, before returning down the same trail.

Our hike was great and our guide was the highlight; he did so many little things beyond just guiding us. I also thought the timeline of our itinerary was perfect.
