Why we like this hotel
- Situated on the shores of the Beagle Channel in the city of Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world and door to Antarctica
- A place of tranquillity and rest, whilst being just a 15-minute journey out of town; a well-scheduled shuttle service is also provided by the hotel
- Walk along the shore by dawn, day or dusk and witness the extraordinary birdlife that visit the waters and Isla Navarino mountains
- Experience a constant state of awe with breathtaking views of the channel and mountains throughout the hotel, afforded by wide windows and a stunning communal glass room
- The inviting interior is rustic and homely in style, perfect for reflecting on a day spent on one of the many excursions offered
Immerse yourself in the splendour of Patagonia’s unique landscapes and wildlife through an array of excursions from Los Cauquenes Hotel. Excursions include National Park and Glacier treks, boat trips, cooking classes, fishing, and bird watching. Regular shuttle transfers also run between the hotel and the centre of Ushuaia, with its range of restaurants and small shops.
8 different treks are offered from the hotel, ranging in duration and levels. Build a deep knowledge of the geography and wildlife of the region hiking through the Tierra del Fuego National Park, the place where the Sub-Antarctic forest meets the Beagle Channel and the Andes mountain range. Trek through forests and mountains to Lapataia Bay, combining the hike with a cruise on the Beagle Channel, or all the way to Isla Redonda for an additional shore-to-shore trail. Or ascend the Martial and Vinciguerra Glaciers, getting acquainted with amazing views of the city at the end of the world from various vantage points.
You'll be driven to and collected from the start and end points of your treks. Picnic lunches are included on full-day hikes.
Boat trips are available to suit to a range of interests. Embrace a different perspective of Ushuaia while sailing out to the deep waters of the Beagle Channel.
See the abundance of sea-birds and marine mammals that the region is home to with trips to Mary Ann and Les Eclaireurs islands, or the Bridges archipelago and Isla Redonda. Navigate from the Magellanic Penguins at Martillo Island to the historical Harberton's Wharf. If you're looking for a luxury gourmet experience, enjoy an Argentine-style afternoon tea or dinner whilst cruising along the channel; watching the sun set over the Andean Mountain Range.
Ideal if you want to plan a more relaxed day, or combine with a half-day excursion. A two-hour Fuegian cooking class with the hotel chefs is offered, where you will prepare some of the region's most popular dishes, such as Tierra del Fuego crab, before enjoying them in the Reinamora Restaurant. The hotel also offer a guided tour of Ushuaia city, in which you'll visit traditional neighbourhoods, seek out panoramic viewpoints, and have the opportunity to discover its rich history.
The size and bustle of Ushuaia is usually a bit of a shock to people expecting a sleepy town at the bottom of the world. This hotel gives you the opportunity to escape the built up city but still have access to the incredible surrounding natural scenery.
About Los Cauquenes Hotel
Set on the shore of the Beagle Channel, Los Cauquenes offers a rare combination of a remote blissfulness and close proximity to Ushuaia. To the front, the hotel overlooks the famed waters explored by Darwin, whilst to the back, remarkable views of the Isla Navarino mountains.
Guests are free to roam the natural surroundings independently or through the varied offering of excursions; while the hotel also offers a free shuttle service into town. The journey is an easy 15-minute ride and conveniently runs throughout the day until 11pm.
Food & Drink
The main Reinamora Restaurant offers a fusion of regional dishes with an international touch; the menu presents an inspired approach to local, high-quality produce.
Delicious afternoon tea, homemade pastries, boards of smoked delights, and a wide selection of wines are also all available in the Wine Bar and lounge, where guests can unwind in front of the fireplace.
Spa, Pool & Gym
Another highlight is the hotel spa, which features 24 different treatments and massages that are focussed on the ingredients from the region. The heated swimming pool extends both inside and out, over the Beagle Channel and its views; while the views also continue into the fitness centre. End a fulfilling workout by resting in one of the jacuzzis.
The atmosphere at the hotel is laid back, with characterful common rooms such as the wine bar and lounge, where stories of the day's adventure can be shared. The hotel has a gorgeous glass room where guests can relax whilst enjoying the extensive panoramic views. Or, enjoy the views from outside, wrapped up on the heated terrace with a glass of Argentinean Malbec from the hotel's wine cellar.
This hotel has a great range of excursions from off the beaten track ice hikes to visiting penguin islands, boat trips to access trails in the national park and bird watching. One of my favourites is the cooking classes.
