Why We Like This Estancia
- Set on 5,600 acres of land overlooking the Patagonian fjords, surrounded by miles of treks, bike trails and sailing routes
- Access is limited to a private crossing of the Ultima Esperanza fjord, adding to the magical feel of the place
- Located just 5 miles from Puerto Natales, the main port for boats touring the fjords, in Chile's southern Patagonia
- Plan full-day tours of the region on the high speed sailing boat, visit Cerro Ballena by horse, or book a 'full moon' excursion
- Fully-equipped and warmly decorated, the estancia accommodates groups of nine with the possibility of requesting additional beds
From bike rides with sweeping views to horseback rides and hikes through unexplored places, and local birdlife spotting, delight in the bounty of the natural environment during a range of excursions.
Choose from full or half-day trips - all begin at 0900 while return times vary. Transfers by boat to and from the estancia are included, as well as either a snack (half-day) or traditional Patagonian lunch (full-day). Full day excursions can be organised as day visits without accommodation, at a price of USD $220 per person.
A private trip on the high speed sailing boat can also be booked (subject to weather conditions). Cross through the Southern Ice Field into one of multiple navigation routes, seeing glaciers, waterfalls, and sea lion and sea bird colonies, among others.
With more than 20 horses and unlimited opportunity for exploration, pass through vast stretches of land while on a half or full-day riding trip. For an immersion into the local archeology, spend a full-day riding out to Cerro Ballena - "Whale Hill" in English, symbolic of the presence of whale fossils - where you can also appreciate a panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges.
Options are available to suit all levels of experience and difficulty, and all equipment is provided.
Full Moon Experience
For a particularly distinctive memory, you can book a night time kayaking or horse back excursion. Revel in the full moon glistening on the waters as you paddle, or witness the illumination of the mountains stretched ahead as you ride across the plains. Admire the immensity of the region and learn from the guides leading the way, then share a Patagonian barbecue gathered around a fire.
While undeniably secluded, you can reach the bustle of Puerto Natales in ten minutes. Look out for any film festivals or other cultural events happening at the Galpón Cultural Center in town during your stay.
About Estancia Bahía Esperanza
Estancia Bahía Esperanza is a private reserve of 2,200 hectares located on the Antonio Varas Peninsula, in Chile's southern Patagonia. Due to its characteristics, the Antonio Varas Peninsula is only accessible by crossing the Última Esperanza fjord, which is a ten minute boat trip from the port city of Puerto Natales. Based across the Señoret Channel, you're presented with an amazing view of the Paine Grande, Balmaceda Massif and Puerto Natales.
There's a host to enjoy in the city, from the unique, local flavours of Aluén's ice cream, to the sensational sunsets at La Costanera, and the local indigenous history at Museo Historic. Of course, you're also very ideally based for exploring Torres del Paine National Park and completing some of the famous or lesser known trails. A daily morning and afternoon bus run to the park from Puerto Natales, or adding a stay here onto a trip to Torres del Paine could be a great way to experience the character of both areas.
Staying for at least two nights is recommended so you can enjoy a hike to Cerro Ballena or the Eagles Lookout as well as a horseback ride alongside condors and eagles in the Southern Beech forest. The place has such a special light and vibe that you will want to extend your stay for forever!
