Trip Details

Day 1: Late morning collection from Punta Arenas airport in private transfer vehicle before setting off across the Patagonian Steppe to see some of the unusual plant and animal life that exists in this area. Our destination is Puerto Natales situated beside the beautiful and mythical waters of Last Hope sound. The town is the gateway to Torres del Paine which on a clear day can be seen in the distance. Here we can wander along the waterfront and dine in one of the town's fine restaurants. The night will be spent at Hotel Weskar (www.weskar.cl) or similar. Just a short walk from Puerto Natales, this wooden-built hotel has gorgeous views of Last Hope Sound and the black necked swans that bob about on its waters. Rooms are light and airy. Laundry and internet are on site. Dinner included, excluding wine and drinks. Trip briefing in restaurant in town. Hotel options: Hotel If, a contemporary spacious hotel situated in the centre of town (www.hotel ifpatagonia.com).

Day 2: Transfer to Torres del Paine on the new road. Walk to the beautiful Mt Ferrier lookout which is situated in the south west section of the Park with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Continue on to Grey Lake beach for a walk along the sandy shores admiring the floating icebergs and immense glacier Grey in the distance. After some time spent walking on the grey sandy beach admiring the views we will walk back to the trail head and join our private vehicle for the transfer to the authentic and comfortable ranch house belonging to Estancia Tercera. Cosy accommodation in this authentic country house with fabulous views of the Towers from its large west facing windows. Fireside living room/bar and traditional quincho (wooden dining room with outside BBQ area). En suite rooms. All meals included (wine with dinner available at extra cost).

Day 3: After breakfast we will be driving eastwards towards the heart of the Park and the granite peaks known as The Towers. Our hike today is the challenging hike to the base of these granite spires that form the centre piece of this geographical wonder. A roundtrip trek which takes us into the Ascending Valley and through old beech forests to a moraine field. A steep climb over and around these giant boulders rewards us with one of the most amazing views in Torres del Paine. Weather permitting, we will eat our final lunch at this incredible viewpoint before descending back to the trail head where we will meet our waiting vehicle for the short drive back to our accommodation at Estancia Tercera. For non-hikers (or if you prefer to venture out on four legs), you could spend the day horse riding in the vicinity of the Estancia. Trails to Laguna Azul or the pretty Zamora Falls situated on the route towards Argentina. All meals included (wine/drinks available at extra cost).

Day 4: After breakfast we will meet our transfer vehicle for the drive eastwards from Paine out of Chile and into Argentina crossing the border at Cerro Castillo. Today’s destination is the gateway town of el Chalten, the jumping off point for the peaks of Fitzroy and the Los Glaciares National Park. Founded in 1937 the Glacier National Park is located in the south western segment of the Santa Cruz region of the Argentinean Patagonia. With its towering peaks, the most prominent of which is Mount Fitzroy at 3,405 metres, the Park offers a fantastic natural landscape consisting of lakes, forests, granite mountains and glacial structures. An obvious draw to hikers, horseback riders and climbers who all assemble in the nearby el Chalten village. Arrive in Chalten and check in to our hotel. Hotel Poincenot or similar. All meals included (wine/drinks available at extra cost).

Day 5: Today we will be choosing from a number of full day hikes in Los Glaciares National Park from the challenging but spectacular hike to the emerald green waters of the Laguna de los Tres to the trek to the Cerro Torre base camp. There are also lots of opportunities for wildlife spotting and short walks in the area so the day can be kept completely flexible depending on both the weather and energy levels. Afternoon return to our Hotel in el Chalten. All meals included (wine/drinks available at extra cost).

Day 6: After breakfast we will be heading back across the Argentine pampas crossing the River Santa Cruz and with luck we will spot the Viedma Glacier before heading on to el Calafate. A cute mountain town with a good selection of souvenir and local craft shops, excellent restaurants and cafes this is a good town for relaxing and taking a welcome break from our hiking. Arriving around lunchtime we will have time to explore town on our own during the afternoon before enjoying dinner in one of the town’s many fine restaurants. Night in Hotel Kapenke or similar. All meals included (wine/drinks available at extra cost).

Day 7: After breakfast, the group will be enjoying a guided excursion to the awesome Perito Moreno Glacier. Just far enough from the bounds of civilization and urban dwellings of Calafate, veiled by towering mountains and an expansive lake, the Perito Moreno Glacier epitomizes the natural beauty and splendor of Argentina. Unique in a variety of facets, including its size, scientific significance, and accessibility, the glacier is an essential stop for any visitor to Patagonia. We will have plenty of time exploring the wonder of this natural spectacle as we walk the wooden walkways with its breathtaking views of ice and water. Afternoon return to Calafate for more exploring and a chance to relax. All meals included (wine/drinks available at extra cost). Night Hotel Kapenke as above.

Day 8: After breakfast we will be joining our transfer vehicle for the journey back to Puerto Natales arriving about lunchtime. Optional afternoon activities available including horse riding, kayaking or yoga or simply explore the town or take a walk along the shores of Last Hope Sound. Night in Hotel Weskar or Hotel If. All meals included (wine/drinks available at extra cost). *Note: for clients short on time or who are intending to continue their onward travel in Argentina it is possible to end the trip today with an airport drop off for flights to either Buenos Aires or Ushuaia.
