1. The National Reserve Tamango and the Chacabuco Valley

Duration: Full day

Activity level: Easy

At around 10am you'll leave the lodge and drive to the village of Cochrane via the Carretera Austral Sur, passing through Puerto Bertrand and following the shores of the Baker River. During this tour of approximately 4 hours you'll experience the continuously changing environment and make a stop to watch the waterfall where the Neff River meets the Baker River. Half way there will be a detour to visit the Chacabuco Valley and look for the guanaco herds, flamingos and black neck swans. After a short sightseeing tour through Cochrane the tour heads to the National Reserve Tamango. After lunch you'll take the boat to the almost cosy Lake Cochrane Chico, with its incredible dark blue colours. At the far end of the lake, you'll disembark and hike in the park searching for the Huemules, the Chilean deer.

2. The Secrets of the Meliquina Glaciers

Duration: Full day

Activity level: Medium

After breakfast, depart in the direction of the Leones River Valley, a drive of about an hour. From here you hike along the Meliquina River, of which (only) the first half hour is uphill. While passing through beautiful Lenga forests, you can enjoy spectacular views of the river and the glaciers of the Northern Ice Field. After approximately two and a half hours you'll arrive at the Meliquina Glacier where there is an impressive view of the glacier, lake and valley. Here you have your box lunch and take time to stroll around and enjoy the tranquillity of the place before heading back to the van.

3. In search of the Petrified Sea Shelves

Duration: Full day

Activity level: Easy/Medium

After breakfast you go by car to the High Lands at approximately one hour from the lodge. From here, the trek starts uphill through ancient Lenga forests, enjoying spectacular views on Lake Carrera and the Contreras Mountain Range along with its Glaciers. After approximately an hour and a half you reach the Veranadas, the plateaus populated by grazing cattle during the summer months. From here you go further uphill (half an hour) until you reach the rocks with the petrified sea shelves, which, amazingly, were part of the Pacific Ocean in ancient times. Here you can eat your box lunch while enjoying this unique scenery before heading back to the van.

4. National Park Jeinimeni: like walking on another planet

Duration: Full day

Activity level: Medium

At around 9am, leave for the Jeinimeni National Park near Chile Chico. Upon arriving at Chile Chico, there'll be a short city tour before heading to the national park. After enjoying your box lunch you'll start the trekking tour of approximately 4 to 5 hours. The route takes you through valleys of typical Patagonian steppe where nature excels with its great variety of geological rock formations. Here the Piedra Enclavada is known as the most extraordinary rock, similar to an obelisk of approximately 30 meters high and standing alone in the middle of the meadow. From here, continue uphill to the Cueva de las Manos, a naturally formed cave where the old Indians of Patagonia, the Tehuelches, drew their paintings over 8000 years ago. Finally we cross a moonlike landscape with beautiful rock formations shaped as labyrinths and natural sculptures. After another half hour walking you'll arrive back at the car and return to the lodge.

5. The Marble Chapels and the Exploradores Glacier

Duration: Full day

Activity level: Easy

After breakfast, leave to Puerto Tranquilo. It is a beautiful drive along the northern shores of Lake Carrera, passing Lake Negro and the Leones River. Just before arriving at Puerto Tranquilo, at one hour from El Mirador de Playa Guadal, you can, when the weather allows for it, take a boat tour on Lake Carrera to the Marble Caves, an intriguing geological formation formed by an island of marble polished by the turquoise coloured water of the lake. The tour will take about an hour, after which you can enjoy a coffee at Hostal Carretera Austral at the entrance of the village. From there you'll take the road that leads to the Pacific coast (last 10km not finished yet). After 50km, arrive at the site to start the short trek to the Exploradores Glacier. At the end of the path there is a viewing platform, you can enjoy a great view on the Exploradores Glacier. The way back to the lodge will take about 2-3 hours.

6. Exploring the Lake Carrera

Duration: Half day

Activity level: Medium

During this excursion (weather dependent) you take the boat around the most beautiful parts of Lake Carrera. First, head to the Desague, where Lake Carrera joins Lake Bertrand, which offers a great view of the Bertrand Glaciers. From here you'll pass along the northern side of Lake Carrera with impressive views of the San Valentin Glacier, the highest peak of the southern Andes (4058m). Passing the Leones River you will cross the lake and arrive at one of the nicest beaches of the area. From here, there is a spectacular panoramic view over the lake with all glaciers right in front. Getting back to the lodge takes only 20 minutes from here.
