What was your most memorable moment?
Hiking up to Paine Grande glacier in the French Valley. The rushing wind, swirling clouds, and the noise of the seracs created a powerful sensory experience.

Tell us about the Trekking
Our guide, Claudia, was terrific. Our group was mixed -- some people with a lot of hiking experience, some with very little -- and she did a great job of balancing the needs of the less experienced hikers with those of the weekend warriors. She was very knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, and history of the region, and her passion for Patagonia and for hiking came across powerfully. I would tell anyone planning to hike in Torres del Paine to get Claudia as their guide if at all possible.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?
Practice hiking with a full backpack before you go, preferably for a few weeks. On many trails, the footing is loose rock, but you'll be able to move faster and more comfortably if your core and your legs are used to walking with the extra weight of your pack. And definitely bring all the clothing layers SWOOP tells you to bring!
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
I came away with greater faith in humanity. I met so many people from all over the world who feel a sense of awe in nature and are passionate about respecting and preserving it. Our guide taught us a lot about the natural history of Patagonia, which gave me a greater appreciation for the complexity and change that are constantly at work in our world.
