Tell us about Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine is a beautiful national park! The scenery is wonderful, the trail (for the W Trek) is easy to follow.

Something Else?

Considering how expensive the refugios were per night, I was shocked by how rude some of the staff in multiple of the refugios were (not just to me). I have travelled all over central & South America, and around Europe and the customer service in the refugios was shocking. Nothing to do with Swoop or the guide/porters - they were all brilliant! Hopefully this message can be passed on to the owners of the refugios - I’d be happy to give more details. The meal service was good at two of the refugios (Central & Cuernos) but at Grey the food was awful, the sit down lunch was inedible on the final day. For the price the refugios charge for the meal service (paid for as part of the package so I wasn’t aware how much food for each day was), they are completely ripping customers off and serving bad quality food. I would also be happy to go into more detail on this. I am a meat eater but some of my group were vegetarians (not a difficult dietary requirement) and it was like the kitchens didn’t even try with their sandwiches…

Tell us about the Trekking

I booked a guided trek, as a solo traveller who didn’t know whether the W Trek would be easy to do on my own! My guide was friendly and professional, however due to different abilities within our group I didn’t make much use of him! I was much faster than my group (fairly experienced hiker) so saw him in the mornings and then decided to head off at my own pace. The W Trek is a lovely trek - no altitude issues and beautiful scenery every day! There were a few challenging days but overall I found it really enjoyable. The trail is clearly marked and easy to follow.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?

Plan in advance if you want to stay in bunk beds! A guide is unnecessary if you have multi day hiking experience! Weather is unpredictable so be prepared for sun, wind, rain and snow.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

No comments for the team at Swoop except for the fact that when I originally booked, I was told over the phone that the team could help me book a bus out of Puerto Natales which didn’t seem to be the case in the end! All good - it was easy to do myself. Please could you pass on my comments about the food and staff in the refugios to the companies that own them? I would be happy to give more detailed feedback but I was actually shocked by the way some of the staff spoke to me (I’m well travelled and not from the USA so I’m not expecting staff to bend over backwards, just not for people to be actively rude). The food at Grey was especially bad - they charge customers a lot for it. I’ve put that in not interested in more trips with swoop, not because I didn’t enjoy it, but because I’m not interested in the destinations! I’m already going to Antarctica with Bark Europa and I’m from the UK so wouldn’t need a tour for Ireland or Scotland!

How prepared and excited for Patagonia did you feel?

Very excited - Patagonia was beautiful and the trek was lovely.
