Tell us about Buenos Aires
I'm glad we spent less than 1 day in Buenos Aires (just because of flight connection issues). Too crowded. Horrible traffic.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?
Brief overview: It takes a lot of time to Patagonia and to travel between Argentina and Chile. Pick one side or the other. Go to Ushuaia or Punta Arenas to see penguins. We met several people who added this to an antarctic trip. I liked El Chalten best, but my wife liked Torres Del Paine. Both have beautiful mountains that are usually at least partially obscured by clouds. High winds in both places, so bring good wind pants and jacket. Not much fauna. We were never able to see a puma even though we paid for a full days excursion. Pumas are extremely elusive. If you want to see (guaranteed) big cats, go to Tanzania. I would not recommend the puma trip. I'm disappointed in myself for not arranging a trip to see penguins and other sea mammals. There are many glaciers. We saw the Moreno (El Calafate, Argentina) and the Grey (Torres Del Paine). That was too much glacier viewing for me. I felt like I waisted at least one day on these trips. Crossing the border from Argentina to Chile by bus took the entire day (bus trip was approximately 8 hours including the border crossing). More waisted time. Furthermore, there is a sign at the bus station and on the bus that said we needed a special pass to leave Argentina from the Department of Migrationes. This was NEVER mentioned by Swoop. We tried to get the pass, but were unable to get it. Fair amount of anxiety over this. Turns out, all you needed was your passport. Not sure what this pass was for and why the bus ticket seller and the bus guide insisted we needed it - prior to leaving Argentina.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
Let people know about this bizarre Argentine exit pass that people told us we needed. We saw too many glaciers (Moreno and Grey). I wish our trip planner had discussed this with me. I'm really not happy about the amount of time (and money) we spent on the boat trips. I asked about whether there were safes in the hotels and I was told there were safes in each hotel. True, but some of the safes were too small to hold a computer.
How prepared and excited for Patagonia did you feel?
Reasonably well prepared.
