Tell us about EcoCamp
EcoCamp was stunning! The rooms could do better with their temperature regulation -- it is way too hot in the day time (like a sauna) and very cold in the night. The food, ambiance, and staff were fantastic.
Tell us about the Trekking
Our guide was amazing and I really appreciate the alternate treks that were quickly planned given the unforeseen circumstances. Relying on the local company and guide was key to my enjoyment of the trip, as rescheduling everything on my own would have been very difficult. I deeply appreciate the guide taking the care to track the weather and plan our hikes accordingly.
Tell us about Torres del Paine
The Torres del Paine park is unbelievable! I really wish I could have done the entire O circuit to soak in more of the amazing views and unique nature of the park. The W trail and camps were fairly crowded and that took me by surprise, so I was looking forward to the more rural and untouched part of the backcountry. Overall, I was very impressed with the infrastructure (bathrooms, kitchens, dining halls) at each of the camps and appreciate the varying levels of camping that are offered.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?
Think about what you want to get out of your trip and how much you're able to dedicate to planning! Is it a physically-focused trip? A socially-focused trip? A culturally-focused trip? This can help you decide how to plan and travel. Booking campsites/refugios for the W and O trek takes a lot of effort and must be done much in advance. Since I did not have the time and capacity to do so, and knew I wanted to go with people, I chose to book through a company. However, this trail is very well-marked and the infrastructure is very well-established that if you plan well in advance, you may be able to do it on your own! Going through a company definitely offers peace of mind, especially in the case of a sudden change in plans, so if you are looking for that type of ease I recommend an organized group. While a guide is not essential to completing the hike, it added a lot of color to my experience in terms of learning about the park, the geology, the flora and fauna, and the Chilean culture.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
Yes, it has taught me about the many ways one can travel - with and without a guide, with and without porters, with and without a group. It has shown me what type of traveler I'd like to be in the future and has challenged me to go with the flow. At the end of the day, we are there to respect mother nature and she had her own plans for my trip.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
I felt a lack of communication between the local partner, Cascada, and Swoop and would recommend improving that link to provide the most accurate information to the client. I only became aware of these misalignments when I joined my tour group in Puerto Natales and compared notes with those that had booked through other companies or with Cascada directly.
