Trekking in Chile’s Lake District (Part One)

Dec 6–11, 2025

Join your hiking group

On Lake Todos los Santos

Enjoy quintessential Patagonia moments

After meeting your guide at Puerto Montt Airport, you'll take a short 25-minute transfer to Puerto Varas, a picturesque lakeside town known for its German heritage and wide views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. Settle into your hotel and enjoy a free afternoon to explore the town’s cafés, waterfront, and artisan markets.

The following morning, you'll set off along the shores of Llanquihue Lake, heading east towards the Andes. You’ll reach the emerald waters of Todos Los Santos Lake, where a scenic boat ride carries you deep into the mountains. From here, begin a 5–6-hour hike through lush temperate rainforest, crossing rivers and passing waterfalls on the way to the remote valley of El Callao. Your overnight stay is at a welcoming, family-run mountain shelter.

The journey continues the next day with a more challenging trek towards Lake Rupanco. You'll climb 400m and descend 715m, traversing quiet valleys and high ridgelines with sweeping views. At the end of the day, a cosy lodge and hearty homemade meal await in the lakeside hamlet of Las Gaviotas.

On Day 4, take a boat across the lake to a set of natural hot springs—an ideal spot to relax tired limbs—before enjoying a home-cooked lunch with your hosts. Later that afternoon, transfer back to Puerto Varas by road.

The next morning, catch a flight south (not included) to Puerto Natales, the quiet gateway to Patagonia. After your transfer, spend a laid-back afternoon beside the fjords, where the summer light lingers until after 10pm. Your adventure continues as you cross into Argentina. The 6-hour drive to El Calafate offers opportunities to spot guanacos, condors, and other wildlife. Once across the border, enjoy a leisurely lunch and some free time to explore the town.

Trekking in El Chaltén (Part Two)

Dec 11–17, 2025

Laguna Torre and Cerro Torre

Laguna Torre hike

Looking out at the Viedma Glacier

From El Calafate, travel across the windswept steppe to El Chaltén, Argentina’s trekking capital nestled beneath the dramatic spires of the Fitz Roy range. After settling in, you’ll meet your guide for a full briefing and gear check before heading into the wild.

Over the next several days, immerse yourself in some of Patagonia’s most iconic landscapes. Begin with a hike through ancient lenga forest to the breathtaking Laguna de los Tres, where Mount Fitz Roy rises sharply behind turquoise waters. From here, the journey continues into the valley of Madre and Hija lagoons, with sweeping views of Fitz Roy leading to the striking Maestri viewpoint overlooking Cerro Torre.

The route then crosses into more remote terrain, including zipline crossings over glacial rivers and steep ascents to mountain passes. You'll tackle the Agachonas and Viento passes, with panoramic vistas of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the vast Viedma Glacier unfolding before you. Campsites along the way offer simple comfort and camaraderie beneath starry skies.

The final stretch takes you along the lesser-travelled Pliegue Tumbado trail, where each forest clearing opens up to epic views of the surrounding peaks and Lake Viedma. Returning to El Chaltén, you’ll enjoy a final night in town before travelling back to El Calafate—tired, exhilarated, and full of memories from this unforgettable mountain escape.
