Operator's Itinerary

Day 1:  Balmaceda - Puerto Tranquilo

Journey time:  4 hours / 198 km paved and gravelled road.

Departure toward the south, the road first crosses the beautiful Castillo Mountain Range to then continue along the Ibanez River. From there the road goes deep into the Andes, crossing beautiful passes. At the Joffre pass it is still possible to see the effects of the eruption of the Hudson Volcano in 1991.

After crossing the Murta River, the road begins to border the General Carrera Lake until arriving to Puerto Tranquilo.

Day 2: Puerto Tranquilo

In the morning, excursion to the Capilla de Marmol.

Later, you could drive toward the west on a road that crosses to Bahia Explorador on the Pacific (one bridge is still missing to reach by car the ocean).

Midway, it is recommended that you stop at Glaciar Exploradores and do the short hike to the view point, it is a self-guided hike and entrance fee must be paid on location.*

Return to lodging in Puerto Tranquilo.

*Also, with prior reservation, passengers can hire a guided hike to the glacier itself and walk on the ice.

Day 3: Puerto Tranquilo - Cochrane

Journey time:  2.5 hours / 117 km gravelled road

Departure in the morning to Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane.

On the way we stop at the Valle Chacabuco visitors' center and the hotel boutique that Conservacion Patagonica has at the beginning of the Chacabuco valley. Visitors can also drive eastward toward the border (Paso Roballo) and observe the wildlife of the valley, especially: Guanaco (Lama guanicoe), Nandu (Rhea americanus), Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) and foxes (e.g. Dusicyon culpaeus). Rarely seen, there are also in the valley Puma (Felis concolor), Vizcacha (Langostomus maximus), and the Andean Deer (Huemul, Hippocamelus bisulcus).

Day 4: Cochrane - Puerto Bertrand

Journey time:  1 hour / 49 km gravelled road

In the morning, it is suggested that you visit the Lago Tamango national reserve. It is possible to hike and look for Huemules and other native birds and animals. Also the circuit can be completed with a short navigation on the Cochrane Lake.

For a better understanding on the environment, before leaving for the reserve, stop at the Conaf office in Cochrane and hire a ranger as a guide.

In the afternoon return to Puerto Bertrand

Day 5: Puerto Bertrand

Free day to relax.

You can take an excursion (at additional cost) from the lodge in the surrounding area such as navigation or rafting on the Baker River, horseback riding, and hikes.

Day 6: Puerto Bertrand - Chile Chico

Journey time:  3 hours / 139 km gravelled road

Early in the morning departure toward the north but this time bordering the south east shore of the General Carrera Lake.  It is a narrow and winding mountain road with magnificent views of the lake, the andes and the northern ice field.

After crossing Las Llaves pass, the road starts to descend toward Chile Chico always bordering the lake.

Day 7: Chile Chico - Coyhaique

Journey time:  More than 4 hours

Ferry crossing Lago General Carrera from Chile Chico to Puerto Ibanez

Depending on the ferry schedule, you might want to drive toward the Jeinimeni reserve or hire a navigation on the lake (excursion will depend on weather conditions).

Once on the other side, you can start the 120 km paved road to Coyhaique (4 hours).

Day 8: Coyhaique - Balmaceda

 Journey time:  45 mins / 55 km paved road.

Departure toward Balmaceda or continuation toward the north
